What is an ECG and why is it done?

Electrocardiography (ECG) is a leading diagnostic method of cardiology, based on the registration of electrical impulses that occur during the operation of the heart.

ECG diagnostics allows you to determine the widest range of disorders in the work of the cardiovascular system at various stages: from the first signs of pathology (rhythm, blood supply, etc.) to clarifying the location of a myocardial infarction.

Why do an EKG of the heart?

The electrocardiography method allows timely diagnosis of most cardiovascular diseases, including:

  • assessment of frequency, sources of rhythm and possible heart rhythm disturbances (with specification of the type of arrhythmia)
  • determination of insufficient blood supply to the heart muscle (ischemia)
  • confirmation of the presence of a heart attack with an assessment of its localization
  • determining the presence of ventricular hypertrophy and the state of the heart muscle

The ECG method has no analogues in its diagnostic potential. Together with the necessary examinations and collection of clinical data, it allows you to choose effective treatment, including operative treatment.

This safe and affordable technique is used both for prevention, including pregnant women and children, and for determining heart pathology, as well as secondary changes in the heart for diseases of other organs and systems.

All types of additional research and tests, specialist consultations with an accurate diagnosis are available to ECG patients in the shortest possible time.

Indications for ECG

ECG of the heart is carried out both on the doctor's referral and on the patient's personal initiative. The reason may be:

  • repetition of sudden weakness, fainting, dizziness
  • rapid heartbeat, not associated with physical or emotional stress, shortness of breath
  • chest pain (heart)
  • age over 40-45 years
  • the presence of risk factors (smoking, alcohol, increased cholesterol in the blood, acute infectious diseases)

How does the ECG work?

In our medical center, ECG studies are conducted in an equipped room where all conditions are created for the patient's convenience. The procedure does not cause unpleasant sensations and lasts only 5-10 minutes.

The specialist places the required number of electrodes on the chest, arms and legs. Then the device records the necessary readings, displays them in real time on a computer monitor and prints them on a special tape.

Direct instructions for the ECG:

  • diagnosed cases or suspicions of cardiovascular diseases (hypertension, arrhythmia, ischemia, heart attack, stroke, heart defects, inflammatory processes, etc.);
  • diabetes, dysfunctions of the thyroid gland, metabolism, etc.;
  • pregnancy (when registering, increasing or decreasing pressure, fainting, chest pain and other concomitant diseases);
  • preparation for surgical intervention, hospitalization;
  • chronic diseases of the respiratory system.

Analyzing the ECG, the cardiologist can quickly detect heart abnormalities. After the procedure, the conclusion is issued to the patient within 10-15 minutes.

You will also receive advice on the need for additional diagnostics and visits to specialized specialists. You can register for any procedure or appointment with a doctor on the same day.
